DLD Munich 2024: Where visionaries shape tomorrow

This year’s DLD conference, Europe’s leading innovation event, took place from January 11-13 in Munich. The event brought together a diverse mix of business leaders, world-class scientists, artists, designers, startup founders, and investors, all unified by a common goal: to connect the unexpected. Attendees enjoyed a selection of sessions and workshops where top experts shared their insights on various topics, from the latest in digital media and artificial intelligence to groundbreaking advancements in biotechnology and creative industries. As a long-standing partner of DLD, we at BPI once again joined the stage and the stands for this lively knowledge exchange, and hub for innovation and collaboration.

Revolutionising fan experiences: Introducing Hidden Door

Among the many highlights of the conference was a captivating panel featuring BPI’s CEO, Christian Teichmann. Christian was joined by digital media pioneer Hilary Mason to introduce Hidden Door, a novel interactive platform that redefines book and movie fan experiences by immersing users in narrative games inspired by well-known titles. Described as a “Netflix for interactive fan experiences,” Hidden Door allows fans to collaboratively explore and create within fictional universes. This innovative approach leverages cutting-edge technology to enhance user engagement and offers a new dimension to fan interactions.

Hilary explained that unlike conventional AI platforms, Hidden Door’s unique architecture ensures creators maintain control over their worlds, providing a dynamic yet loyal extension of the original narratives. This aspect is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the source material while offering fans a personalised and immersive experience. Christian emphasised the platform’s potential to revolutionise the media landscape of fan engagement and content creation, blending innovative technology with imaginative storytelling. The panel illustrated how Hidden Door represents a significant leap forward in the way audiences interact with their favourite stories.

AI and the future: Insights from Aleph Alpha

Another standout session featured Jonas Andrulis, CEO of Aleph Alpha, one of our portfolio companies at BPI. Jonas‘ panel, titled “Our Responsibility to Go All-in on AI,” underscored the critical role artificial intelligence plays in shaping the future of the German economy and beyond. He highlighted the urgent need for Europe to match the AI advancements seen in the U.S. and China to avoid geopolitical dependence, a move which would require significant investment to maintain competitive edge and technological sovereignty.

Andrulis pointed out that AI is not merely a technological trend but an industrial revolution, crucial for addressing demographic challenges and enhancing public sector efficiency. Through initiatives like the generative AI system F13, already aiding administrators in Baden-Württemberg, Aleph Alpha demonstrates how AI can empower human experts by ensuring transparency and reliability in complex tasks. This application of AI in real-world scenarios exemplifies its transformative potential across various sectors. This commitment to innovative and practical AI development aligns with our mission at BPI, and we are thrilled to support Aleph Alpha on their journey.
